Võru Cemetery and the monument of the War of Independence

The cemetery was established to bury the fallen soldiers of the Estonian War of Independence. The War of Independence started in November 1918 with Soviet Russian aggression in Estonian Republic. The war ended when the Tartu Peace Treaty between Estonia and Russia was signed in 1920. 500 Estonian soldiers lost their lives fighting for the independence of their country. The monument was destroyed during the following Soviet occupation and was restored in 1988.
