Three sacral buildings are known to have been existing in Otepää in the Middle Ages.
It is believed the St. Michael’s mentioned in 1638 was the predecessor of the current
one. Having been heavily damaged during the different wars a new church was erected
in 1860. The church was the place Estonian national flag was blessed. Secretly, so the

Germans would not find out about it.
