First mentioned in 1453 the manor has revealed an underground passage leaving from the manor. Its purpose is unknown. The
world famous polar explorer Eduard von Toll, died while trying to find the mythical land of Sannikov, is from Kukruse. The area around the manor was where oil shale was first mined in Estonia.
A legend says local peasants received a miraculous relevation on this hill and later on found an Orthodox icon most holy under the oak-tree here, a sacrificial one itself. All of this happened in the 16th century.
