The surrounding village by the same name is first mentioned in 1241 in The Danish Census Book.
It belonged to a local elder called Saxo. One of the very few Estonian noble families survived the aggressive Christianisation, Maydells, derived their name from the village’s. The manor is sometimes called the Sparkling Manor for the tiny glass
fractions added to the grout on the walls that shimmer in the sun.
