It has been suggested that Kaarma church was built after the Estonian rebellion on the
island – the last big one before the final conqure by the Livonian Order. Erected close
to the sight of a former Estonian fort the ground wasn’t suitable for a church though.
It is guessed a catastrophe occured while building he church – the base sank and the
cealing collapsed.
