Muhu stronghold was a scenery for one of the last battles in 1227 before Estonians were conquered by the Livonian Order. The Chronicle of Henry of Livonia speaks about 20 000 men beleaguering the castle for five days, Older Rhime Chronicle of Livonia speaks of 2 500 being killed and only one managing to escape. While building a dam over the Small Strait in the 19th century the stones from the fort's strong walls were used as the filling material.
