The history of the town hall square in Tartu goes back to ancient
times. It is most probable that the main trading center of the

time was there, the area between the castle on Toomemäe hill
and harbour by the river Emajõgi. The first town hall was built in
Medieval Times. The current one is the third. The reason why
Tartu looks relatively new compared to its beginning is the many
wars and fires.
