Kärkna monastery was established in the first quarter of the 13th century by the first bishop of Tartu, Herman I who, having lost his sight, spent his old age there. He, and allegedly a Danish princess as well, is buried there. An army from Pskov destroyed the monastery 1234, it was re-built as a vassal-castle but destroyed again in the Livonian War.
