Great Coastal Gate and Fat Margaret's Tower were built to protect the city from the seaside, but also to impress quests arriving by sea. The Great Coastal Gate (built at the same time with the city wall) is located in the northern part of the Old Town of Tallinn near the port.
In the 16th century, during the reconstruction of the gate, the Fat Margaret's artillery tower was built nearby.
Today, the Fat Margaret houses Estonian Maritime Museum.
Listed in UNESCO heritage, the complex provides an overview of maritime trade, agencies, and navigation in the Middle Ages, as well as in the era of sailing, steam, and motor ships. There is a total of 1,000 m² of exhibition space. The star exhibit is the 700-year-old Koge wreck found in Kadriorg in 2015. There are about 70 ship models out of which 17 have been created specifically for the exhibition, nearly 700 items, and 50 digital and hands-on solutions.
Films and hands-on displays at this extensive museum show how Estonian-dwellers lived, fought and survived through 11,000 years.
The museum covers Estonia's history from prehistoric times’ right up to the end of the 20th century.
