The Orthodox congregation of Kuressaare was founded after the Great Nordic War to fulfil the religious needs of army men, merchants and their families. Their first tiny wooden church of only 35 squares was built in 1750. The current limestone church was erected in 1789 by a command of Catherine the Great.
